The second day of the ongoing Test between Australia and India saw some attritional cricket from the visitors as they refused to up the ante and batted with the same pace. Amidst all the slow going in the middle, Tim Paine had a go sarcastically at Rohit Sharma taking a dig at the Indian Premier League (IPL) while enticing the batsman to hit a six off Nathan Lyon.
Paine and Aaron Finch were in the ears of Sharma constantly when Australia had a chance to dominate after the duo of Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli got out in quick succession. Paine brought the mid-on fielder inside the circle and challenged Rohit to go over the top also saying that if he hits a six, then he will start supporting Mumbai Indians in the IPL.
“Finch, you played for too many IPL teams. It’s always been a toss up for me between the RR and MI, who I support. If Rohit hits a six here I’m changing to Mumbai,” Paine told Finch who was fielding at short-leg while Lyon was bowling to Sharma.
Rohit’s perfect response
Rohit Sharma, just before the start of the third day’s play, went on to say that he had a discussion about the same with his partner Ajinkya Rahane. He went on to say that if Paine scores a century then he will ponder over picking the Aussie captain in the Mumbai team for the IPL. Moreover, he also added that it was important to focus on batting at that point in time.
“I was hearing that but when I’m batting I just focus on the job at hand. But I had a chat with Ajinkya Rahane and I joked that if he (Paine) gets a hundred here, I will put in a word about him to my boss at Mumbai Indians and we’ll buy him. Looks like he’s a fan of Mumbai,” Rohit said.
With India dominating, it will be interesting to see if the Rohit Sharma says something to Paine in the second innings when he comes out to bat.
