Rohit Sharma inspired by Swedish teen green activist Greta Thunberg; calls for climate action

Swedish teen environmental activist Greta Thunberg caught the headlines across the world by making a passionate speech on climate change at the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York organized by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The 16-year-old, who has inspired an entire generation of school students to stand up against climate change by demonstrating outside her country’s parliament last year and led to the global Fridays For Future movement, slammed the international delegates saying they did little to save the planet. And among those who were impressed with the teenager’s brave stand is ace Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma.

On Tuesday, Rohit called the Swedish teen sensation “inspiration” in a tweet after she expressed herself angrily yet emotionally at the summit. Thunberg lashed out at the world community saying she wanted to be back in school but the situation forced her to be at the summit. She accused the world leaders of having stolen her dreams and childhood. The girl was also seen boiling in anger while seeing US President Donald Trump entering the summit as she was held back by a security official.

In his tweet, Rohit said, “Leaving the saving of our planet to our children is utterly unfair. @GretaThunberg, you’re an inspiration. There are no excuses now. We owe the future generations a safe planet. The time for change is now.”

Rohit hasn’t scored enough runs after the World Cup

The 32-year-old Rohit had a fabulous World Cup in England this year where he amassed 648 runs in nine games with five hundreds but fell for just one in the all-important semi-final. Thereafter, his bat hasn’t looked as broad and has produced just one international fifty.

Rohit didn’t score enough runs in the just-concluded T20I series against South Africa either, falling for only 12 and 9, respectively, as the series was tied 1-1. The Mumbai batsman has been picked for the upcoming Test series against the Proteas and is likely to be promoted as the opener for the first time in the longest format. Rohit is one of the few batsmen in the world who have scored hundreds in all three formats of the game.
