The stand-in skipper of India Rohit Sharma set the stage on fire in Indore last night with his belligerent hitting against Sri Lanka in the second T20I of the series. He slammed the joint fastest century in the T20Is off just 35 balls and went on to score 118 off 43 deliveries. He could have gone past the 200-run barrier in the shortest format of the game had he stayed in the middle for few more overs. However, the Hitman has recalled his childhood days when the police had threatened him to arrest for breaking the windows of the neighbours while playing cricket.
The six-hitting ability of Rohit is so surreal that he only relies on timing and not on power while smashing the ball. He is so talented that he has so much time while playing a delivery and he makes the most of it. He put on an exhibition at the Holkar Stadium in Indore as the ball travelled to all the parts of the ground. The cricketing fraternity was in awe of his knock and many thought the way he batted was unreal.
Sharma opens up in a show
Only hours before the second T20 International began, the television presenter and the host of the show ‘Breakfast with Champions’, Gaurav Kapur released his conversation with Rohit Sharma during the show. The 30-year-old has opened up largely on his life on the show and also recalled his childhood days when he used to love playing cricket. The Hitman was not so famous in his childhood days as his sixes used to break the windows of their neighbours.
“My family always liked cricket. In a day, if not for all the 24 hours, at least 16 hours we used to watch cricket. All my chachas (uncles) and buas (aunts) have played cricket, not at the highest level but in school and college. Of course (my uncles got involved in my game). When I used to play in our building, my chacha used to watch me from top, checking my batting. I have broken a lot of window glasses. There was a police complaint against me for breaking glasses,” he said.
Once police came and threatened with putting me in jail if repeated. All the neighbours were troubled by us daily (breaking glasses). We were three to four of us who played cricket always. Later we used to go to grounds and play but we never completely let go of playing in our building. We never gave up on that,” the stand-in captain added. While the same neighbours would not be complaining now as the same child is breaking records more frequently than his used to break their windows.
