Though India have some key encounters to take care of in the ongoing Asia Cup, the Men in Blue are also using this opportunity as a preparation for future assignments. Of them is certainly the World Cup but also the tour of Australia starting in November has been kept in mind. Stand-in captain Rohit Sharma has given enough hint at that on the eve of India’s opening encounter in Asia Cup against Hong Kong on Tuesday.

India have recently included former Sri Lankan first-class player Nuwan Seneviratne in their sizeable coaching staff and though he has been roped in as the squad’s assistant fielding coach, his primary role would be to chip in as a left-arm throwdown specialist to share the work with D Raghavendra who had been doing it alone till now.

Seneviratne’s skills impressed Indian team

According to Sharma who is leading India in Asia Cup in the absence of regular skipper Virat Kohli, the players and management were impressed with the 38-year-old’s skills during India’s last tour of Sri Lanka. He said his addition would help the Indian batsmen, especially when they will face a number of left-arm pacers in the ongoing Asia Cup as well as in Australia in the recent future.

“Looking at the future, we’re going to be playing in Australia and they have quite a few left-arm bowlers. In Asia Cup as well, we’re going to be encountered with left-armers. I think it’s a great move by BCCI to bring him in. He seems to be quite accurate with whatever he does. He’s pretty good at his job and it is a great addition to the team. Guys are only going to benefit,” Sharma was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

India will play three T20Is, four Tests and three ODIs in Australia between November this year and January 2019. The Indian team has two engagements in the Asia Cup in as many days starting Tuesday. While they take on Hong Kong on September 18, they will lock horns with Pakistan on September 19.
