In a thrilling NatWest T20 Blast game, Yorkshire got the better of Worcestershire at Leeds to maintain their number one spot in the group. David Willey’s performance was one of a kind, as he smashed 118 off 55 balls – during which he hit nine fours and eight sixes. Willey smashed the bowlers all over the park and John Hastings, who was at the receiving end, went for 58 runs in 2 overs.

After Willey, it was opener Adam Lyth who scored 31 runs to bring up the second most number of runs for his side. And with other minor contributions from all the middle-order batsmen, the total went past 200. It looked like Worcestershire was a challenging total but the way they started, it set them up for the chase. Hastings’ cameo at the top of the order ended in the 4th over but a half century from Joe Clarke still kept them in the game.

Clarke along with Santner added 37 off 27 balls before the latter fell. After that, Ross Whiteley walked in but Clarke’s dismissal meant Worcestershire now had little hopes for a win. But Whiteley came out all guns blazing. The 28-year-old created history as he smashed six sixes off left-arm spinner Karl Carver, but despite the heroics, they were still far away from the target as they needed 60 from 4 overs.

Whiteley went on to score 65 runs off 26 balls which were laced with 2 fours and 8 sixes – but could not take the team home as they ended the 20 overs with 196 runs and eight wickets.

Yorkshire rule the points table

Although Worcestershire lost the game, Whiteley’s six sixes, which is no mean a feat, will not fade away anytime soon. After this game, Yorkshire are on the no. 1 position in the North Group with 3 wins from 4 games, while Worcestershire are second last in the group with 2 losses from 2 games
