The new found crisis man of the West Indies team in Test cricket – Roston Chase – has earned his maiden call-up to the ODI setup. He has been named in the 13-man squad for the 3-match ODI series against Afghanistan. The series commences on June 9 with all matches scheduled to be played at the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground in St Lucia. Chase has been a prolific performer in the recent past for the national side in Test cricket.

He had an exceptional time during the home Test series against Pakistan recently. With a couple of centuries to his name, Roston Chase had certainly announced his arrival at the big stage. Last year, he had impressed with the bat in the Test series against India as well. Commenting on his inclusion, the WICB Chairman of Selectors Courtney Browne noted that he was in contention to be picked for quite some time.

They opted to draft him in the squad for his all-round ability. Despite not being among the top run-getters in the domestic 50 over competition, he managed to get the call-up riding on his recent form in the Test cricket. Those performances could not be ignored.

“He was considered before for ODI selection, primarily because of his all-round ability. With his prolific run scoring in the last Test series and his continued steady all-round performances in the PCL, we now feel it’s time to introduce him to ODI cricket,” quoted Browne as per the quotes in ESPNcricinfo.

“He was not among the leading run-scorers in the Super50 tournament earlier this year, but we believe with his skill set and the way he has been playing, he could be an asset. His outstanding efforts with the bat could not be ignored any longer, coupled with his useful bowling can only add value to our squad,” he added further.

West Indies Squad:

Jason Holder (captain), Devendra Bishoo, Jonathan Carter, Roston Chase, Miguel Cummins, Shannon Gabriel, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Evin Lewis, Jason Mohammed, Ashley Nurse, Kieran Powell, Rovman Powell.
