Russell Domingo has coached South Africa ever since he was appointed as the head coach of the side in 2013. After three contract renewals and four years in the role, Domingo is not sure if he wants to stay on and take South Africa into another ICC tournament. His contract will expire soon and he hasn’t reapplied for the position yet.

Great results under Domingo

South Africa has had a great run during Domingo’s tenure. Out of 13 Test series in Domingo’s tenure, the Proteas have lost just 3 series while winning 9 of them. In the ODI arena, South Africa have won 7 out of the last 9 series which included successive whitewashes of a strong Australian side and a decent Sri Lanka, both at home. They were in great form leading up to the Champions Trophy but failed to set the stage alight as they were knocked out in the first round itself. South Africa have perennially failed in major ICC events and again burnished their reputation of succumbing to the pressure on the big stage.

Cricket South Africa has now advertised the position on their website and Friday is the deadline for the prospective applicants to send their applications. Domingo can only reapply in the next two days if he wants to take the position again. A five-person panel including Gary Kirsten and Eric Simons will screen the applicants and then recommend a suitable candidate, who will take over until the end of the 2019 World Cup.

England Test series to be his last

Domingo’s contract will expire after South Africa’s Test series in England. After the conclusion of the Champions Trophy, South Africa will first play a 3-match T20 series in England followed by a 4-match Test series which ends on August 8.

South Africa’s next assignment after their England tour is the 2-match home Test series against Bangladesh which starts in the last week of September. It remains to be seen if Domingo will be retained at the helm.
