Indian cricket has produced a number of stupendous cricketers over their cricketing history, right-handed batsman Sunil Gavaskar is one of them. He forayed into international cricket back in India’s tour of the Windies in 1971. Thereafter, he went on to play 125 Tests in which he amassed 10,122 runs at a stupendous average of 51.12 to go with 34 centuries and 45 half-centuries.

The 69-year-old was the first batsman to accomplish 10,000+ runs and 30+ tons in the longest format. In 2005, Sachin Tendulkar scored his 35th Test century to break Gavaskar’s world record. At the first-class level, Gavaskar has over 25,000 runs with 81 tons. The former cricketer’s limited-overs career was impressive as well. He played India’s first ever match in the format against England.

Sachin all praise for Gavaskar on National Sports Day

In 108 matches, the veteran notched 3092 runs at a decent average of 35.13. His only century in the 50-over format came in his penultimate ODI against New Zealand in Nagpur back in 1987. He was also a part of the Kapil Dev-led Indian team, which won the World Cup in 1983 by beating Clive Lloyd’s Windies in the final at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground.

His last international appearance came in an ODI against England in Mumbai in 1987. Gavaskar currently weaves his magic as a commentator in cricketing events across the globe. Recently, Tendulkar heaped praises on the legendary cricketer on the occasion of National Sports Day. The Master Blaster hailed him for his unruffled temperament.

He took to Twitter and wrote, “To me, #SunilGavaskar is the epitome of unwavering concentration & courage. To step out on the field against a team that was well-known for ferocious pace bowlers and still achieve one of his highest batting averages. All I can say is … Wow! #NationalSportsDay #SportPLAYINGIndia.”
