Although he may not be the West Indies T20 skipper anymore, Darren Sammy has reportedly wished his replacement Carlos Brathwaite well on the latter’s new assignment. Speaking ahead of his first ever assignment as West Indies skipper, Brathwaite revealed that he did indeed have a conversation with the former skipper to pick his mind for some advice on the tough assignment ahead and get the latter’s blessing as well.

Darren Sammy has been frozen out of the WICB plans following some terrible comments made by the 33-year old after becoming the first skipper to claim his second World T20 title. Since then, Sammy has been heavily involved in media work and has served as commentator in the Indian Premier League. However, he has also been involved with the St. Lucia Zouks and the Hampshire in the CPL and the NatWest T20 Blast respectively.

Speaking to the media, Brathwaite said, “He just told me, ‘Congratulations’. He heard it before I spoke to him, and he just said, ‘Congratulations, it’s a big challenge’. He gave me his blessing and as a senior guy appreciated it, which allowed me to ease into the role,” Brathwaite was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “I haven’t officially started yet, but it has allowed me to transition easier from just being told [about the captaincy] to the excitement of wanting to get on the field and lead. It was a good vote of confidence speaking to Sammy, then I saw him at a charity event, saw some of the senior guys as well, all have been telling me positive things.”

Carlos Brathwaite will now lead a full-strength squad into the two-match T20 international series against the Indians in Lauderhill, Florida. However, the challenge for the 27-year old will be on how to lead the side that boasts of players like Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, and others.
