India’s first ever World Cup triumph in 1983 is the reason for the immense popularity in the country for the sport. The heroic run of the team in that tournament is set to hit the theatres soon with the superstar Ranveer Singh playing Kapil Dev on the screen. Sandeep Patil was also part of the history and he played as a wicket-keeper in the team. Interestingly, Sandeep’s son Chirag Patil is set to play his role in the film and is very nervous about the same.
Kabir Khan is directing the movie and has selected Chirag for Sandeep’s role. Chirag has never played cricket professionally and has worked in as many as 11 Marathi and Hindi films. It won’t be a problem for him to enacting on the silver screen but the fact that he will be playing his father in the movie has made him nervous. However, Chirag feels he is one of the luckiest to be able to play his father’s role.
He is my hero
“I’m really excited, the ’83 World Cup win is considered a milestone in Indian history and to be a part of that team is a dream come true and playing my father who’s my hero is just awesome. I don’t think any actor has ever played his father on screen, I’m a first. Luckily, I landed the part,” Chirag Patil was quoted as saying by Deccan Chronicle.
Chirag also put light on how he has been training to look like Sandeep, his father, on the field. Balwinder Sandhu has been part of the training and Chirag was at ease after a nervous start with the bat enacting his father.
“Ballu uncle (Balwinder Sandhu) and his team have been training us since August. I also took some training sessions at Chandrakant Pandit’s Cricket Academy (CPCC) whenever free time. The best cricket coach in India stays in my house and that’s a big help. Right now the focus is to train well and get my father’s style right,” Chirag further added.
