Just when India’s cricket fans were yet to complete relishing their favourite team’s 36-run win over defending champions Australia in the ICC World Cup, the news left them stunned. Yuvraj Singh, India’s first superstar cricket who made his debut in the 21st century, decided to hang up his boots and move on with life. The 37-year-old left-hand batting all-rounder’s announcement came at a press conference in Mumbai on Monday and it was a moment that saw the entire sporting world coming to a standstill.
‘Motuuu’ and ‘Mirchi’
While praises came in thick and fast from all across the globe, including from Pakistan, ace tennis star Sania Mirza also spoke over Yuvraj’s retirement and revealed in her message how close she has been with him. In a tweet, she called Yuvraj’s exit the “end of an era” and wished him all the best for his next phase in life.
Sania, who is the wife for veteran Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik, also addressed the just-turned-former cricketer as “motuuu”. Accompanying her tweet was an image of her with Yuvraj. While the latter was holding a tennis racket, she held a cricket bat in her hand.

Yuvraj made his debut for India in 2000 against Kenya in Nairobi and gave glimpses of his superior batting skills in the very next match against Australia when he hit 84 off 80 to see his team win. The player had seen the highs and lows and survived almost two decades in international cricket.
A cancer survivor, Yuvraj is also seen as a social role model and his highest point in career came in 2011 when he won the man of the tournament award as India lifted the World Cup in 2011. Yuvraj finished with 8,701 runs and 111 wickets in 304 ODI matches. He also played in 40 Tests but didn’t have equal success in the longer format.
