Sanjay Manjrekar has high regards for Virat Kohli even among Indian greats

From a personal front, Virat Kohli is in the middle of a purple patch of his cricketing career. He is currently in England, leading the Indian team in the five-match Test series against Joe Root’s men. Albeit, the visiting team slumped to a 31-run defeat at Edgbaston in Birmingham, Kohli racked up a couple of stupendous knocks of 149 and 51 to shoulder India to the threshold of a historic win.

Prior to the first encounter, the Delhi-born cricketer didn’t have records to boast of on English soil having faltered in India’s erstwhile tour of the nation back in 2014. However, Kohli’s current form has left the cricketing fraternity awestruck as he single-handedly kept his team alive in the opening Test. Lately, Sanjay Manjrekar, the former Indian batsman, also lauded Kohli on his impressive run.

He’s finding a special place

Manjrekar, on Monday, August 6, spoke in a debate with Jason Roy, the English batsman, David Richardson, the International Cricket Council Chief Executive, and Mark Nicholas, the former Hampshire cricketer after the CEO delivered the MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture. During the interaction, Manjrekar mentioned that Kohli is carving a special place even among the Indian legendary cricketers.

“Even among Indian greats now, he’s finding a special place. It’s amazing. You talk about dirty Varanasi waters, but Indian waters keep producing these kinds of phenomenal batting talents, year after year, generation after generation,” Manjrekar was quoted as saying by ICC’s official website.

“Sunil Gavaskar quit in 1987. We had Tendulkar two years later, in 1989. And as he was winding up his long career, here comes Virat Kohli. Even amongst Indian batting greats, he’s finding a special place,” the 53-year-old added.
