Sarfaraz Ahmed reacts to the furore on his yawns during the India game

On the big occasion, in the India vs Pakistan match, the latter didn’t just lose the match but it was a thrashing they were handed by the Men in Blue. While most of the team was caught napping in terms of their performance against the arch-rivals skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed behind the stumps yawned a couple of times which add insult to injury for a lot of supporters of the team.

There is one camera constantly fix on the captain of the team and especially if he is someone as reactive as Sarfaraz. He was making a few field changes as the bowler went to his mark for the next delivery and yawned, it was filmed and aired all around, he did that another time and there was immediate furore on social media.

The fact that Pakistan lost the game to India gave people additional opportunity to hit hard at the captain as well as his team. Though the Men in Green didn’t put up the best effort that they could’ve, Team India proved to be a far superior opponent. They lost the match by 89 runs (DLS method) and was more of a one-sided contest.

Since then the whole of the Pakistan team and Sarfaraz, in particular, have been subject to extreme criticism. Their families have been involved, their off-field acts, behaviours, where they go, what they do, eat and everything else was brought up for public debate. Sarfaraz even had to face the disgust of a shameless fan walking up to him at a mall while he was with his child and asking him why he’s as fat as a pig. That he recorded on his phone and even put it up on social media.

Yawning is pretty normal

In the press interaction before the next match against South Africa, where Pakistan will get an opportunity to redeem themselves against a struggling opponent, Sarfaraz talked about the yawn as well.

“I was just yawning, it can happen. I didn’t commit a crime or something, yawning is pretty normal, I had to so I had to. People have milked the occasion and made money out of it. If good things happen for someone because of me that’s actually useful,” he said.
