Pakistani cricketer Sarfraz Ahmed opened up about how Indian media ganged up on him for singing to the famous ‘Mauka Mauka’ tune after winning the 2017 Champions Trophy. For those who are unaware of the song’s history, here is a little throwback.

‘Mauka Mauka’ was a jingle used in an advertisement campaign created and distributed by Star Sports to promote the 2015 World Cup. It was about a Pakistani cricket fan who has been waiting to burst firecrackers and celebrate Pakistan‘s win over India since World Cup 1992. It is 2015 now, and he is all grown up and watching the match with his own kid, waiting for the miracle to happen. It was a not so subtle dig at Pakistan’s quite unimpressive streak against India In ICC tournaments, especially World Cups.

It was supposed to be a one-time standalone commercial. Though many people said it was a mockery and not made in good humor, the video went viral with an overwhelming response from Indian fans. The channel went on to make a series of similar ads for the future India-Pakistan match in an ICC tournament and the tune became synonymous with the decades-old rivalry.

Sarfraz begins mocking Indian team

In a recent interview with Shoaib Jutt, aired in the show ‘Sports Action’ on Pakistani channel Samaa TV, Sarfaraz looks back on the time when he gave the Indian media a taste of their own medicine. After winning the 2017 Champion’s Trophy, beating India by a huge margin of 180 runs, the captain celebrated by singing the same song with fans who gathered outside his home. But not to anybody’s surprise, the Indian media slammed him for it.

“The way they created a sensation out of me singing Mauka Mauka was hilarious,” he said. “You’ve been making fun of us with this song for so many years–so what if I sang it only one time?”

He also got tagged on social media sites by Indian fans where anchors of various Indian news channels were criticising Sarfaraz for the action.

“I was tagged everywhere with that clip of the bulletin in which their anchors were slamming me for singing that song.” He took a slight dig at the Indian cricketers as well, saying how their normal conversations on the field include a lot of swear words and abuses, but the Pakistanis are criticised for similar behaviors.

“People like it when Kohli does it. But if we do it, then there is trouble,” he remarked in a light mood. In the same interview, he also brought up the ball tampering scandal. He called it out as a “deliberate act” since it was done in the open for everyone to see. “They’re not playing club cricket. Even a child knows there are 24 cameras installed there and everything is visible,” he said.
