In the ongoing Abu Dhabi test, the Azhar Ali run out has sparked off some controversy. The batsman was looking rock solid when a brain fade led to a very strange dismissal. Azhar edged the ball past gully and assumed it had gone for a boundary. He was thus standing in the middle of the pitch casually chitchatting. However, it so happened that the ball stopped a couple of yards before.

Both the batsmen stopped midway in their run and started chatting. Mitchell Starc quickly retrieved the ball and Tim Paine who was aware of the proceedings effected the runout at the striker’s end. For a moment, it seemed as if Azhar Ali was dumbfounded before realizing what actually happened. It drew various reactions from different cricketing corners.

Styris points out double standards

As Pakistan got trolled for their dismal runout, former Kiwi cricketer Scott Styris co-related it with a 12-year-old incident. The all-rounder was of the opinion that New Zealand received a lot of flak for the Murali run out. Hence, he also awaited condemnation of the same from Australia. He even shared a video of the old incident.

“I’m just waiting for the condemnation of Australia….again….for enforcing the run out in Abu Dhabi! You know, like NZ received for the Murali runout in 06. #dumbcricket or #badsportsmanship #dumb” he tweeted.

A flashback of the Murali run out incident

However, in comparison, both run outs are way too different. While the current Azhar dismissal can be attributed to carelessness and lack of judgement, the Murali run out was surely in the wrong context. Here, Azhar made the mistake of being unaware of the ball while Murali had rightfully grounded his bat.

Kumar Sangakkara had completed his century. Muralitharan after having completed the run walked up towards the legend to congratulate him. In the meanwhile, Brendon McCullum hit the stumps, appealed for it and Muralitharan was given out straightaway. The incident surely created a lot of furore as Styris recalled.
