Even while India and Sri Lanka were playing a series played in India in the month of December in 2017, most of the news was being generated by the tour of South Africa that was to follow – India had to deliver in conditions considered as Achilles heels for them. While the Test against South Africa series didn’t go well for India, they fought back in both the ODI and T20I series and registered they’re first ever bilateral series win in the rainbow nation. As was expected, the series attracted lots of viewership because none of the games was a one-sided affair.

As per a report give on insidesport.co, the second T20I between the two countries received an unprecedented viewership number, which also helped Sony Ten retain their number one rank in the Indian television sports genre ratings. India won the second T20I and leveled the series 1-1. The match had 25% more viewership than what the show that topped the viewership numbers last week had.

Cricket – most viewed sport?

Cricket, for years, has been one of the biggest sources of income for sports broadcasters, along with football. Each year, Star Sports benefits in huge ways from the broadcast of the Indian Premier League, which is not just watched in India but across the world. Football is the only sport that comes before cricket in terms of global viewership, as per a recent study.

India’s next assignment is the Nidahas Trophy, a tri-nation T20I series against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, which begins on March 6. With the regular captain, Virat Kohli rested for the series. Rohit Sharma, who captained India in the third and final T20I against South Africa, will be at the helm during the tri-nation series. Other star players like MS Dhoni have also been rested, which means the games may not get as many viewers as it does with star players on show.
