Indian skipper Virat Kohli was at his best during the recently concluded ODI series against New Zealand. He not only led his team to yet another series win (a streak of seven successive series win in ODIs) but to add to it, he scored massive amount of runs. His 31st hundred in the 1st ODI in Mumbai stands testimony to his class. Even though the hosts went down on their knee, as they failed to defend 281 but the skipper’s rich form was there to be seen.

The 28-year old batsman was once again busy in the middle during the decider in Kanpur. He scored his 32nd hundred and ensured that this time his team ends up in the winning side. But there was a difference which not many would have noticed. Kohli took a leg stump guard in the 2nd ODI, the match where he scored 29 and got out playing a poor shot. He had to flash his bat as he was playing away from his body.

Change in guard

The hallmark of  great player is the fact that how quickly he can ‘learn-unlearn-relearn’; learning from the goof-up, Kohli took a middle stump guard in the final match of the series. It not only helped him play the ball from a more comfortable position but also made the visiting side’s bowling pack bowl to his strength. He batted in a positive manner and din’t let the bowlers get on top of him.

India’s next assignment is the the T20I series against the same opposition. It will be interesting to see if Kohli once again manages to stay one step ahead of the opposition and come out with a full-proof plan. For now, we can sit back and enjoy those lusty drives. The three-match T20I series between the two sides starts on Wednesday, November 1, at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium, New Delhi.
