The series decider between India and New Zealand turned out to be a thrilling contest. In the end, the Indian team held their nerves better and won the game by a margin of 6 runs. With this win, the hosts went on to secure their fourth consecutive ODI series win on the trot. Earlier in the day, it was skipper Kane Williamson who won the toss as New Zealand elected to bat first. Both the teams fielded an unchanged XI and trusted the boys to do the job once again.

Batting first, India lost Shikhar Dhawan early. In walked Virat Kohli and what followed was a magnificent 230-run partnership between Rohit Sharma and the skipper. This partnership was a record fourth instance when the Rohit-Kohli pair exceeded the 200- run mark.

Rohit displayed his splendour with the bat in what was a stupendous inning of 147 runs from just 138 balls. On the other hand, Virat Kohli continued to display his tremendous run as he notched up his 32nd ODI century. Together they propelled India’s total beyond 300.

While Hardik Pandya failed to put up his big hitting prowess on display despite being promoted to No.4, the duo of MS Dhoni and Kedhar Jadhav scored some quick runs. Their cameos at the fag end ensured India had a formidable looking 337/6 at the end of fifty overs.

Mitchell Santner was the pick of the bowlers with a couple of wickets. Adam Milne bowled well in the death overs and picked a couple of wickets. Tim Southee bowled really well as he accounted for the big wickets of Dhawan and Kohli. Trent Boult surprisingly was dealt by the Indian batsmen with disdain as he was taken away to the cleaners; he spent 81 without any success the most he has in his ODI career. He and Colin de Grandhomme went wicketless.

A total of 338 was always going to be tough but the Kiwis were off to a free-flowing start. Colin Munro took the attack onto Bhuvneshwar Kumar and turned on the heat as he smashed 18 runs in the first over. While Martin Guptill was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah, giving India their first breakthrough, the visitors continued to stay strong.

Both Munro and Kane Williamson put up a 109-run stand for the second wicket and they both scored splendid half centuries. However, Yuzvendra Chahal accounted for their wickets in the space of his 3 overs. While Ross Taylor got out after a good start, Tom Latham again showed a glimpse of his Wankhede stint despite the fact that the required rate was way higher this time.

In the end, New Zealand’s hopes swung upon the duo of Latham and Henry Nicholls. However, some splendid death bowling by Kumar and Bumrah sealed the deal for India. The action boiled on to the last over where Bumrah managed to defend 15 runs and saved 7 to give them the winning margin of 6 runs.
