Shivam Dube is all set to make his international debut for India in the upcoming T20 series against the visiting Bangladeshi team. The left-handed swashbuckling all-rounder from Mumbai has been on the fringe of a national call-up courtesy his consistent run-of-form in both List A, FC as well as domestic T20 cricket. Dube- a ruthless hitter of a cricket ball- first rose to limelight when he stroked veteran spinner Praveen Tambe for five sixes in a Mumbai T20 league game in 2018.
But it was only during the 2018-19 season of the Ranji Trophy that Shivam’s stock rose to its zenith. In what was a disastrous season for the Mumbai Cricket team, the left-hander emerged as the spearhead with both bat and ball, as he finished with 632 runs while also taking twenty-three wickets at an average of 23.21.
It was during a Ranji Trophy game when the all-rounder did an encore of what he had done to Tambe earlier in the year: hit five sixes in five balls, forcing the Indian Premier League franchises to take notice of his precocious hitting talent. Dube was eventually picked up by the RCB for INR 5 Crore for the 2019 season.
While talking to Yuzvendra Chahal on Chahal TV, Dube’s Mumbai Ranji team captain, Shreyas Iyer had admitted that the left-hander hits bigger sixes than him while also revealing what he said to him before he stroked five sixes in one over against Baroda.
“We told him before the day started that today your price will increase in the auction only if you hit six sixes in an over. So then he ended up scoring a hundred and hit five consecutive sixes in that innings. Tabi jaake usko paanch khokha Mila (Only then did he end up getting Rs 5 crore),” said Shreyas Iyer as Dube laughed beside him.
With the first T20I between India and Bangladesh set to get underway at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday, the southpaw is leaving no stone unturned to hone his skills ahead of his imminent debut. The BCCI social media team shared Dube’s practice session and the fans, looking at his backlift can’t help but compare him to the legendary Yuvraj Singh.
