Bangladesh medium-pacer Shahadat Hossain and his wife Nritto Shahadat were today acquitted by a local court in the case of torture registered against them. They were charged for torturing an 11-years-old girl who was employed with them as a maid, a prosecutor was reported saying.

The 30-year-old fast bowler was charged for assault and torture after the juvenile girl was found by people crying at the roadside while she had bruised and swollen eyes. Ali Asgar a prosecutor from the Women and Children Representation Tribunal was quoted by AFP saying, “The couple have been released as the prosecution failed to prove them guilty,”

On their part, the couple pleaded not guilty after a complaint was lodged against them. Shahadat surrendered to the police in October last year and had to spend around two months in the lockup. He and his wife both were later released on bail.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on its part had banned the cricketer from all forms of the game while the investigation was underway. In May this year, the BCB allowed Hossain to take part in domestic competition on grounds of “humanitarian considerations” while his case was still under jurisdiction. That also made way for him to be included in the domestic Twenty20 competition, the Bangladesh Premier League. But no franchise showed enough interest to pick him in the squad for the ongoing 2016 season.

In his career, Hossain has thus far played 38 Tests for Bangladesh, during which he grabbed 72 wickets, and 51 One-Day Internationals and has 47 wickets in his account.

After the decision from the court, Hossain said, “The truth has won,”

On his hopes to make a comeback to the Bangladesh national team, he was quoted by AFP as saying: “I still have something to give to my country.”
