Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has hinted at retirement from all forms of cricket after the 2022 edition of the Pakistan Super League. The 41-year-old is currently one of the most successful all-rounders in the history of the PSL. In 50 matches, the Khyber Agency-born has scored 465 runs and picked up 44 wickets with one five-wicket haul to show for his efforts.

Afridi has played the PSL for three franchises- Karachi Kings, Peshawar Zalmi and Multan Sultans. However, he wishes to pull the curtains down on his career after playing for the Quetta Gladiators, currently led by former national captain Sarfaraz Ahmed. Nevertheless, Afridi’s participation in the team depends on the who’s who of the Gladiators and Sultans.

Shahid Afridi wants to play for Quetta Gladiators

“Maybe this ends up being my last PSL. I would like to play for Quetta Gladiators this season, provided Multan allow me to leave. If Nadeem Omar and Quetta’s owners want to have me, I would love to represent them,” Afridi was quoted as saying to the reporters, ESPNcricinfo reported.

Afridi last played international cricket in 2018, representing the World XI in the match against West Indies at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. However, he has continued plying his trade efficiently in the PSL. Afridi led the Zalmi in 2016 and was a part of the team that won the championship in 2017.

He was also a part of defending champions Sultans, who won the 2021 PSL after beating the Zalmi in the final. Afridi took part in the first leg of PSL 2021 at the Karachi National Stadium. However, he missed the second leg in the United Arab Emirates after suffering from a back injury.

In the PSL, his strike rate of 153.46 is the third best after that of Kieron Pollard– 166.24- and Luke Ronchi- 166.12 for batters with a minimum of 30 innings. Afridi recently played for the Rawalakot Hawks in the 2021 edition of the Kashmir Premier League at the Muzaffarabad Stadium.

Afridi remains one of the legendary figures in Pakistan cricket. In his international career, he scored 11,196 runs with 11 centuries and 51 half-centuries. He also picked up 541 wickets at the highest level with 10 five-wicket hauls.
