The Mumbai Indians are the most successful franchise in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). They have won three titles and have achieved everything that the fans could’ve asked for. The absence of the Chennai Super Kings in the last two seasons provided them with a chance to consolidate their position as the most successful side in the IPL and they took the chance with both hands by lifting the title in 2017. However, things haven’t gone well for the defending champions this time around.

MI have won just two of their eight games so far. The men in blue have made a comeback from similar a situation in the past but to repeat such a feat again may be too much to ask for. Most of their matches have been last ball finishes wherein they remain on top of the game for the major part and stutter just in the final moments. The playing combination of the team is also not sorted and the qualification scenario also looks bleak. The franchise most recently lost the game against RCB by 14 runs.

Will history repeat itself?

Mumbai Indians bowling coach Shane Bond is still optimistic about the team’s chances of making it to the playoffs. “We have six games left and we have to win all of them. Even if we win it might not be in our hands, depending on the other results. I still believe we have key players in our squad who can win us six games in a row. We have done it in the past, I believe that we can. We just have to take one game at a time. Motivation has never been a problem for us.” Bond was quoted as saying by indiatimes.com.

For history to repeat itself, they will need more than just skill and luck. Another slip-up would shut the doors for the men in blue and they must prepare to go home. It has just not been the season for the Mumbai who have struggled to get over the line against most of the franchises. They haven’t had a convincing performance so far and will quickly need to figure out the right combination to stand a chance in the tournament.
