Former Australian leg-spinner, Shane Warne believes that Joe Root could become the world’s best if freed from captaincy. Joe Root is currently the English Test skipper. During a promotional event of his autobiography, No Spin, Warne voiced out his opinions. The 49-year-old felt that if the shackles were broken for Joe Root, he could completely concentrate on his batting.

“Maybe England could think about their best player having the shackles off, not having the responsibility of captaincy. If he (Joe Root) totally 100 per cent concentrates on his cricket, his batting and nothing else, then maybe we might see Joe Root become the best batsman in the world,” Warne said. The Victoria-born cricketer added that Joe Root has got the talent to do the same.

Also, the controversial cricketer said that he was pretty disappointed with Joe Root’s conversion rates. On several occasions now, Root has thrown his wicket away after getting to a half-century. The Yorkshire batsman got out in the 80s many-a-time which didn’t please Warne. He said that Root would love to have more hundreds to be compared with the likes of Steve Smith and Virat Kohli.

“He’d love to have more hundreds to be able to be spoken about in the same sentences as Virat Kohli and Steve Smith,” he said.

Shane Warne suggests a new captain for England

Shane Warne said that Jos Buttler would be the perfect fit as the England Test skipper. He said that Buttler will make an excellent Test skipper. The former cricketer spent close quarters with the current English Test vice-captain during the IPL while he mentored the Rajasthan Royals. Hence, he wants the wicket-keeper batsman to replace Joe Root as the captain.

“I’ve worked with Jos a bit this year, and I think he’s someone who would make an excellent captain. I really enjoyed working with him, I’d like to think I helped him out a little bit,” he said as quoted by Cricket.com.au
