The retirement of AB De Villiers came across as a shocking news to the cricketing universe. With more than 20,000 runs in his international career, Mr 360 degrees bid adieu to the game. Being an inspiration to the generation for his unorthodox batting and a wide range of cricketing shots, he stepped down at the age of 34.
Earlier this year, the Proteas batsman who hadn’t been a part of the Test squad announced his return to the format. He followed it up with some amazing batting against India and later against Australia. The South Africans went on to register series victories against both of them.
Citing tiredness and running out of gas as the reason, AB De Villiers stepped down as he shared a video on Twitter. He felt that it would be good to watch a youngster come in at his place. He further thanked all the fans as well as Cricket South Africa for the support over the years. He vowed them to continue supporting skipper Faf Du Plessis and the Proteas team.
As he hung his boots, all the other cricketers whom he has played with and against took to Twitter. They congratulated him for having such a phenomenal career and wished him all the best for the future. Right from Sachin Tendulkar to Shikhar Dhawan, everyone expressed their gratitude to the Superman.
Shane Watson also congratulated AB De Villiers on a dream career. Both him and AB De Villiers were part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore till last year. Watson described him as one of his favourite players, whether it was playing with or against him. He further went on to say that the cricketing universe will miss ABD.
Watson speaks
“Congrats @ABdeVilliers17 for an international career that people only ever dream of. One of my favourite players to play against and most certainly one of my most favourite teammates I have ever played with. You will be missed mate. #respect”
