One of the fastest bowlers to have ever stepped onto the cricket field, Shaun Tait has been appointed the new bowling coach of the Afghanistan cricket team with immediate effect. Shaun was known to set the speed gun on fire as breaching the 155 kmph wasn’t a big deal for him during the prime of his career. His prowess earned him a lot of success in the international arena as many batters feared to tackle him.

Shaun, who played international cricket between 2005 and 2016, didn’t have a long international career as his injuries didn’t allow him to play regularly. Nevertheless, he managed to make a significant mark in the appearances he made. The right-arm speedster scalped five, 62, and 28 wickets in three Tests, 35 ODIs, and 21 T20 Internationals. He even was instrumental in taking Australia to the 2007 World Cup title.

Shaun Tait is a seasoned coach as well

With 23 wickets in 11 games, he was the tournament’s third-highest wicket-taker as Australia got the glory. The ‘Wild Thing’ eventually bid adieu to all forms of cricket in 2018 and started his new innings as a coach. He worked with players in the domestic circuit and played the mentor’s role for some T20 franchises including Melbourne Renegades in Big Bash League. Hence, it would be interesting to see how he delivers for the Afghanistan team.

Meanwhile, the Afghanistan cricket team has taken giant strides in recent years and expectations are sky-high from them. In Rashid Khan, Mujeeb-ur-Rahman, and Mohammad Nabi, the side has some world-class players. However, others also need to step in to take the national team to great heights. Tait indeed has a role to play as fast bowling hasn’t been Afghanistan’s strength by any means.

Meanwhile, the Afghan side is currently gearing up for the T20 World Cup which is scheduled to get underway in UAE in October. With the Afghanistan team not possessing a great record against big teams, not many are backing them to go a long way in the global event. However, the spin-friendly tracks in UAE will certainly suit and it would be interesting to see if they can pull off some upsets.
