'She has been an inspiration to many' - PM Narendra Modi lavishes praises on Mithali Raj

When Mithali Raj decided to call it a day for the Indian national team earlier this month, wishes poured in from all over the world to thank the batting legend for her contributions through the years and for a stellar career. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the latest addition to that list as he congratulated Mithali on her glittering career.

The batting stalwart announced her retirement on 8th June from all formats of the game. The right-hander finished with the most runs in women’s ODIs as she amassed a total of 7805 runs at an impressive average of 50.68. The former Indian captain also finished with 64 half-centuries to her name, which is the most by a batter in women’s ODIs.

Indian prime minister spoke to his listeners on his monthly radio program, Mann Ki Baat, and congratulated the former Indian cricketer on an amazing career. He also spoke about her influence on young athletes in the country as they look up to her for inspiration.

“Friends, when it comes to sports, today, I also want to discuss about one of the most talented cricketers of India, Mithali Raj. She announced her retirement earlier this month, which left many fans quite emotional. Mithali has not only been an extraordinary player but has also been an inspiration to many players. I wish Mithali all the very best for her future,” the prime minister said.

India’s women’s team made a brilliant start to the post-Mithali era as they clinched the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur. The Indian skipper also surpassed the former Indian skipper’s tally of 2364 runs in T20Is to become India’s leading run-scorer in the format.

The all-rounder had given her thoughts on her teammate’s retirement before the Sri Lanka series and hailed her as irreplaceable. “We are working hard on our team where we can create some combinations, but if we talk about Mithali, I don’t think there is anyone who can take her place and we will always miss her in our dressing room,” Kaur said.
