Team India ruled the roost on the day 1 of the first Test of their tour to Sri Lanka. A thoroughly convicing batting performance has put the visitors in firm command of the game. With 399/3 to their bank at the end of first day, it seems almost improbable that the Indian team will lose this game. The chief architect of the day for India was opener Shikhar Dhawan.

Surprisingly enough, the veteran southpaw was not even on the scheme of things for the tour at the first place. It was the untimed injury of Murali Vijay that created the void for the opening slot. Shikhar grabbed the spot and the opportunity with both hands. He scored a quick 190 off just 168 balls with 31 boundaries to his name.

The knock brought back the memories of his debut Test knock where he had dismantled the Australian bowling with a fiery 187. Well, the team management would be very happy to see Dhawan back in the team and in sublime form. It was his superlative run in the ODI format that fetched him a Test recall. He was the leading run scorer in the ICC Champions Trophy this year and had followed the good run in the Caribbean tour as well.

Holiday plans in Hong Kong

In the post day press conference, Dhawan was asked about the plans he had after the West Indies tour. In all honesty, Shikhar Dhawan revealed that he did not expect to be in the Test squad. And hence, had plans to catch up with his family in Australia. Later, he was planning a vacation in Hong Kong too!

“My plans were to go to Melbourne and spend time with my family, and get fit for the one-day series. I was in Hong Kong on a holiday and from there I flew to India and joined the team. Destiny had a different plan. I was happy, of course, to make a comeback to the Test side. Unfortunately, (Murali) Vijay wasn’t fit. I had a good run before this Test series and I just came with the same confidence,” said Shikhar Dhawan.
