Shikhar Dhawa was finally getting back in his element in the first ODI against South Africa after being dropped from the XI following the first match on grounds of poor performance in the Test series. Chasing a target of 270 set by the South Africans, after losing the wicket of Rohit Sharma in the 7th over, the scoreboard was ticking just fine to keep the Indians in control. Dhawan was pulling the ball well and punching those fuller along with his drives.

But before he could build on this good start, his innings came to an early end – thanks to a wrong call by his captain Virat Kohli who as at the other end. In the 13th over from Chris Morris, trying to flick it behind square, Dhawan got nothing more than an inside edge and the ball, hitting his pads, went towards point.

All this while Dhawan was trying to figure out where the ball was and Kohli, on the other hand, was already halfway through the attempted single. It was always going to be difficult for the southpaw to cover the distance starting that late; Aiden Markram who is sharp and agile on the field collected the ball from backward point sensed an opportunity for a wicket and broke the stumps with a direct hit at the non-striker’s end.

Dhawan had to walk back to the dressing room having scored 35 off 29 balls and he felt it wasn’t his fault. It is not a usual scene to see someone else fuming at Kohli, but Dhawan was clearly upset since it was a suicidal call for a run and it was he who had to pay for it. He looked back at the captain and immediately questioned the need for that single and wasn’t done yet as he was still muttering and shaking head well after taking his spot in the dressing room.

Twitter exploded with their reactions and usual memes – many of them pointed out how this is only the second time he has been run out in ODIs, the other one being vs Pakistan in 2015 World Cup – and on both occasions, Virat Kohli was the man on the other end.
