Team India kickstarted their 2020 tour of New Zealand with a resounding six-wicket win over the Kiwis after they successfully chased down 204 at Eden Park in Auckland. This was only the second time that Team India pulled off a T20I victory on New Zealand soil, and it was all because of the imperious effort with the bat, spearheaded by opener KL Rahul and skipper Virat Kohli, and finished by Shreyas Iyer.

Chasing the total of 204, India lost the wicket of Rohit Sharma in only the second over of their innings after the Indian vice-captain miscued one-off Mitchell Santner. Put post that the duo of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli shellacked the New Zealand bowling attack to the tune of 115 in the first ten overs to set-up the platform for the shenanigans of the likes of Shreyas Iyer to take over.

Iyer came out to bat after India had lost the prized scalp of KL Rahul with the score reading 115/2 in 10 overs, and with the Men in Blue still requiring a further 89 in the next 60 deliveries. India lost Virat Kohli soon as he chipped one straight to a diving Martin Guptill at deep square-leg and it looked like the Men in Blue will botch another successful-looking run-chase.

Virender Sehwag heaps praise on Shreyas Iyer

But, Shreyas Iyer had different ideas. The right-hander looked unfazed with the situation at the hand and proceeded to anchor the Indian innings as he shellacked the likes of Ish Sodhi, Hamish Bennett, Tim Southee to all corners of Eden Park. His unbeaten knock of 58 runs was laced with five fours and three monstrous sixes, as his unbeaten partnership of 62 runs for the fifth wicket with Manish Pandey, proceeded to take the Men in Blue past the finishing line in a canter.

And, just like the Indian captain Virat Kohli and KL Rahul who heaped praise on Iyer’s temperament, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has also hailed the Indian N0.4. Taking to his Twitter account, Iyer said, “Shreyas ko kaafi Shrey jaata hai. 204 Chase karna har kisi ko nahi aata hai.Great win and full on entertainment. Kohli, Rahul doing business as usual but very impressed with the temperament shown by @ShreyasIyer15.”
