Zimbabwe began the Singapore T20I Tri-series with a 5-wicket win against Nepal in the tournament opener on Friday. Dipendra Singh’s 40 helped Nepal to finish with 132/6 after struggling in the first half. Zimbabwe’s chase started off with a 12-run over but Sandeep Lamichhane took three wickets in his first three overs.

Sandeep finished with his best T20I figures of 4/15 as the chasing side was reduced to 37/4 and eventually 64/5 by end of 10th over. However, Ryan Burl (41*) and Richmond Mutumbami (40*) shared an unbeaten 69-run stand as Zimbabwe completed the chase with 11 balls to spare.

All the statistical highlights from Zimbabwe’s victory over Nepal in the Tri-series opener:

A rare win for Zimbabwe:

2 – Zimbabwe registered their 2nd straight win in the T20I cricket; the first time they won back to back T20Is since 2016. Zimbabwe won their last two matches of the 4-match T20I series against Bangladesh at the start of 2016 and followed it with wins in their first two matches of the 2016 WT20 during the qualifying phase.

16 – Zimbabwe now has won at least one International match in 16 different countries. They have played an International game in 17 different nations but yet to win in the Netherlands. Zimbabwe lost two ODIs and a T20I in the Netherlands and won a T20I Super over.

Only Sri Lanka (19), India (18), Pakistan (18) and West Indies (17) have won an International match in more number of countries than Zimbabwe. Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh and Ireland also won an International game in 16 different nations.

A mixed start as captain for Williams:

7 – Sean Williams became only the 7th player to lead Zimbabwe in the T20I format. Only three of them ended up winning a T20I. Sikandar Raza led Zimbabwe to their maiden T20I win over India in 2015 which is his only T20I as skipper. Graeme Cremer’s first T20I as captain was against India in 2016 which they won by 2 runs.

10 – Williams was dismissed caught and bowled by Sandeep Lamichhane on the first ball he faced. He thus became only the 10th player to be dismissed for a golden duck in maiden T20I match as skipper.

Williams is one of the seven players from Test nations to bag this embarrassing feat. The last of the previous six players was Lasith Malinga during the 2014 WT20. Three other players from Associate nations recorded this feat this year.

Ducks galore in the top-order:

8 – Zimbabwe’s innings is the 8th in T20I cricket where three or more batsmen got out for a duck among the top four. This is only the 3rd instance among those eight occasions that resulted in a win.

A lower-order rescue:

69* – Ryan Burl and Richmond Mutumbami added an unbeaten 69-run stand for the 6th wicket. This is the joint 2nd highest unbeaten stand for the 6th or lower wicket in a successful T20I chase. Mohammad Nabi and Najibullah Zadran shared an unbeaten 86-run stand in this year’s T20I against Ireland also for 6th wicket.

1 – Ryan Burl and Richmond Mutumbami became the first Zimbabwe pair to score 40+ in a T20I while batting at No.6 and lower position. Overall, this is the 7th instance of two players scoring 40+ in the same T20I innings while batting at No.6 and lower position.

A first in Singapore:

1 – This match between Zimbabwe and Nepal became the first-ever Men’s International match in Singapore to be played under the lights. Singapore hosted 23 International matches (14 ODIs and 9 T20Is) before this game; all being day games. Singapore Women hosted three T20Is apiece against Myanmar and Malaysia; all six matches were night matches.
