India’s shocking 60-run loss at the hands of England in the fourth of the five-Test series against England has prompted several cricketers to criticise the team’s performance. The Indian batting line-up faltered once again as the English bowlers made the most of the home conditions. An unhappy Virat Kohli said that his men needed to do more than just compete, in order to win.

Kohli is the leading run-scorer of the series with 544 runs under his belt including two centuries and three half-centuries but he has not been able to get support from any other batsman in the Indian team. Neither the top nor the middle order has been able to lend a backbone to Kohli’s masterclass batting.

“We can look at the scoreboard and say we were only 30 runs away or 50 runs away, but we have to recognise that when we are in the midst of the situation, and not later. We know that we have played good cricket but we cannot say again and again to ourselves that we have competed,” Kohli told the media after losing the Test series.

On losing close matches

Speaking of the lack of finishing ability in the current Indian batting, the skipper highlighted how the team has lost matches it should have rather won and stressed that the batsmen learn to need the art of crossing the line.

“When you come so close, there is an art of crossing the line as well, which we will have to learn. We have the ability, which is why we are getting close to a result, and we have belief in that ability. But when a pressure situation comes, how we react to it… is something we have to work on a bit, and everyone is ready to work on that,” Kohli said.

The fifth and final Test, which is also a dead rubber, begins on Friday. It will also be Alastair Cook’s last Test match.
