It was often argued that unless the media and sponsors pay attention to women’s cricket, it will always remain in the shadow of its male counterparts. Until the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup where the Indian team ended as the runners-up, not many people were aware of a certain Smriti Mandhana or a Punat Raut. However, with the terrific performances the girls put up in England, they finally managed to register themselves in the hearts and minds of a billion Indians who watched them play the final live on the television.

Opener Mandhana was one of the star performers in India’s campaign. She scored 232 runs in nine games, including a 90 and an unbeaten 106 in the first two games. Against South Africa in the recent series that was played in February, the batter scored 84 and 135 in two of the ODIs. She is often called the Adam Gilchrist of women’s cricket.

A power packed performance off the field

Following her performances, she was recognized by some of the brands in India, Bata shoes being among those. Smriti is now the brand icon for Swiss multinational shoemaker Bata for their newly-launched range of Power sports shoes. She has also made an attractive presentation in the commercial TVC for them.

In the TVC, Smriti is seen performing some difficult workouts at the gym, hitting tyres with hammers, rope skipping, heavy lifting etc to signify the ‘power’ of the sports shoes offered by Bata. “The last song has played, the sun has sunk, the heavy lifters are done lifting, the cross-fitters are finished. It’s late, it’s dark, it’s over right? Its time to find your #Power,” the young cricketer says in the TVC.
