India are in the driver’s seat to win the first Test match against Bangladesh at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram as they were clinical in all departments on Day 3 and gave the hosts absolutely no chance to make any comeback. Even the Bangladesh bowlers looked clueless in the second innings as they were given a tough time by veteran Cheteshwar Pujara who got to a well-deserved ton after agonizingly falling short in the first innings by 10 runs.

Chasing a humongous target of 513 runs, all Bangladesh can do right now is try and save the Test match by showing a rock solid batting approach for the next two days as a victory is already a foregone conclusion for them. India on the other hand will be gunning for quick wickets when the play resumes on Day 4.

Cheteshwar Pujara’s century helps India post a 513-run target for Bangladesh

Resuming their innings at 133/8, Bangladesh could only add 17 more runs to their overnight score before being bundled out for 150. Wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav did most of the damage with figures of 5/40. Thus, India had an advantage with a colossal 254-run lead and they made the most of it when they came out to bat in the second innings.

Stand-in captain KL Rahul and Shubman Gill laid a solid foundation with a 70-run opening stand before the former’s dismissal. Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara then kept the scoreboard ticking for India and while the duo respected the good deliveries, they did punish the bad ones by dispatching them to the boundary at regular intervals.

The duo added 113 runs for the second wicket and went on to register their respective centuries. Shubman Gill was eventually dismissed for 110 while Pujara (102*) and Virat Kohli (19*) then ensured that there were no more hiccups for the visitors before the Indian innings was declared at the score of 258/2 to set Bangladesh a target of 513 runs to win.

Bangladesh in their second innings got off to a good start as openers Najmul Hossain Shanto (25*) and Zakir Hasan (17*) have stitched an unbroken 42-run stand. They still need 471 runs from here on.
