David Warner returns ahead of first ODI in Mumbai, shares car selfie with fans

Australian opening batsman David Warner has returned to India after recovering from an elbow injury to join his teammates for the upcoming three-match ODI series that commences on Friday in Mumbai. Warner had to return home halfway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to an elbow fracture sustained during the second Test in Delhi. He was also identified as having a concussion and replaced by Matt Renshaw in the playing XI for the second innings.

Warner posted a selfie of him sitting in a car while waiting in Mumbai traffic on Wednesday. The Australian batter captioned the image “Out and about". A few of his fans were seen posing alongside him, but from a different vehicle.

The ODI series will begin on March 17 with the first match scheduled at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai following which, the action will move to Visakhapatnam's YS Rajasekhara Reddy Stadium on March 19 and ultimately, the last match of the tournament will be played on March 22 in Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium. In Pat Cummins' absence, Steve Smith will lead Australia in the ODI series.

The southpaw found it difficult to score runs during the three innings he batted in the four-match Test series against India that ended this Monday with the hosts winning and retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1. Following this, India and Australia will now face each other again in the World Test Championship final in a couple of months time, preparations for which have already been underway. With Warner completely out of form, speculations about his possible exclusion from the squad ahead of the big game were made. However, putting all of those to rest, Australian head coach Andrew McDonald said that the opener is a part of their WTC plan.

“I think you work through that conversation, and how each player finishes is always different,” McDonald said about Warner.

“Some want to go out in a certain way, and others are OK with potentially being dropped out of sides. But at the moment, Dave’s fully in our plans for the WTC final, he’s coming back for the one-day series (against India), he’s recovered from his injury, so we’ll see Dave back in Australian colours on March 17 and we’ll go from there," McDonald was quoted as saying by News18 cricket.
