The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is arguably the wealthiest cricketing body in the world. Over the years, with numerous matches being played, be it- the domestic fixtures or the national team matches (Women’s team and Men’s team), the contributions have been a significant part to the growing net worth of the BCCI.

It is not a hidden fact that the apex cricket board of the nation pumps in large sums of money to make its cricket remain at a competitive level. However, with this, the board has been able to receive profits in staggering amounts. Furthermore, with the power it holds, BCCI is one of the most powerful and influential boards of cricket, alongside England and Wales Cricket Board and Cricket Australia.

As per the data provided by ‘Sportsamaze’, the total net worth of ICC is $2.5 billion whereas the numbers of the BCCI are just staggering as it is worth nearly $2.25 billion. The underlying question remains how exactly has the apex cricket board of the nation created such massive wealth in terms of net worth?

According to the data by MPL and Times of India, over the years the BCCI has made upwards of ₹18,011 crores as of the data provided in the 2020-21 year. The commercialization that occurred back in the 1990s in terms of broadcasting rights has helped the board attain a position bigger than anyone else and that growth has not slowed down since then.

Adding to this, the introduction of the Indian Premier League in 2008 has contributed profusely to its financial success. The staggering sponsorship deals with ‘Byjus’ and ‘Paytm’ and broadcasting rights and digital rights with associate partners 'Star Sports’ and Disney+ Hotstar have also been a major addition to the uptick in the numbers. Moreover, the participation in the global ICC events also has been a massive contributing factor to the rise in net worth.

BCCI secretary, Jay Shah shared the approximate amount that the board earns from just one IPL match. Furthermore, the inclusion of two new franchises in the league this year 2022 fetched the board a massive $1.7 billion.

“In the last five-year cycle, we got $9 million from one IPL game. This time, going by the present minimum base price that we have set, BCCI will get paid $12 million per IPL match. That’s a giant leap for Indian cricket on the world stage. We will be just behind NFL,” said Shah earlier this year in 2022.

He further added that the board could conduct 94 matches per season from 2026, which essentially means that the BCCI will earn sums beyond one’s thorough understanding. In the forthcoming years, with the current rate BCCI is planning its expansion with the games which include the Women’s IPL starting next year and more, undoubtedly, the board will continue to keep hold of its position as the wealthiest cricket board in the world.
