Team India was very poor in the field during the first innings of the 1st ODI encounter being played at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow. The Men in Blue dropped a total of three catches in the first innings as the African batters served the punishment to the Indian bowlers.

After being dropped by the Indian fielders, batters David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen completed their respective fifties and posted a competitive total on the board for the Proteas.

Indian fielders dropped catches in consecutive overs

The South African duo of Miller and Klaasen went absolutely berserk during the last 10 overs of their innings. However, during the 38th over, in which Avesh Khan was bowling, had Mohammed Siraj and Ravi Bishnoi had taken the catches off successive balls, they would have been returned to the pavilion.

To make the matters worse    , Miller smoked Avesh straight over deep mid-wicket as the ball went sailing over Shreyas Iyer’s head for a six. But then all the limelight was grabbed by the ball boy, who was positioned behind the boundary line. The boy made the catch look very easy and the fans, as well as the commentators, were surprised to see him grabbing the ball so cleanly.

Speaking of how the game panned out, South Africa's start to the first innings was slow, but middle order batters Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller's unbeaten partnership of 184 runs helped the Proteas post a target of 250 runs in the game that was reduced to 40-overs-a-side due to the rain delay.

During the chase, Indian top-order failed miserably as Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad failed to fire. Ishan Kishan, who batted at No. 4 also couldn't do much with the bat. Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson's partnership, followed by the latter's power-hitting prowess led the Indian side very close to a win, but the visitors managed to restrict Team India and bagged a close win.
