Rohit Sharma-led team India registered a 67-run win in their first ODI of the three-match series against Sri Lanka at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.

Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka put the hosts to bat first after winning the toss and what followed was some brilliant batting by the Indians in tandem to post a mammoth total of 373 runs. Virat Kohli spearheaded the batting line-up with his thunderous century (113 off 87) coupled with fifties from skipper Rohit (83 runs) and Shubman Gill (70 runs), which propelled the side to attain the massive total.

Dasun Shanaka's century goes in vain

In response, Shanaka and Co. hit the ground running to keep their run rate in check. However, after the dismissal of Avishka Fernando in the fourth over by Mohammad Siraj, the bowling unit slowly began taking control of the second innings.

Opener Pathum Nissanka kept the scoreboard ticking and played a delicate knock 72 runs from 80 balls before getting dismissed by speedster Umran Malik. The Srinagar-born pacer scalped three wickets along with Siraj who picked two under his belt helped mount the pressure on the visitors.

The contest saw two centuries being scored, while one of them ended in the winning cause, the other ended in the opposite end of the spectrum. Like Kohli, Lankan skipper Shanaka carved out a majestic ton (108*) and tried hard to keep up with the run rate. However, the side eventually succumbed under pressure which led to the hosts wrapping up the contest by 67 runs, thereby taking the lead in the series 1-0.

Team India will play their second ODI on January 12 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata and will aim to clinch the series while Sri Lanka will look to level the series.
