Team India registered a sensational win in the closely contested affair against Sri Lanka in the first of the three-match T20I series at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Men in Blue emerged victorious by two runs in a final ball thriller and took a 1-0 lead in the series. 

The visitors opted to field first and immediately put the hosts in pressure as India were unable to build a vital partnership to begin with. Despite the pitch favouring the batting team, team India swiftly lost five of their batters within 15 overs, with the Lankan bowling unit starting off as they wished. 

Just when India needed an important partnership to to get to a big total, all-rounders Axar Patel and Deepak Hooda’s innings propelled the side to put up a respectable total on the scoreboard. Hooda added 41* runs from mere 23 deliveries coupled with Axar’s unbeaten 20-ball 31 which powered them to score 162 runs in 20 overs. The onus was on the Indian bowling unit to take control and help defend the total. 

Shivam Mavi adds four wickets to his name on debut

It is worth mentioning that Shivam Mavi relished a terrific innings with the ball as he picked up a four-fer in the contest. Interestingly, the match against the Lankan Lions marked his first international outing with the Men in Blue and he put forth his best impression.

The surface at the Wankhede assists the batters and despite the ball skidding and coming well onto the bat, the visitors had little to no response to young Mavi’s deliveries. Adding to this, speedster Umran Malik and Harshal Patel too shared four wickets between them which eventually decked Sri Lanka's batting line-up. 

Team India eventually sealed the contest in Mumbai and have took a 1-0 lead. The Hardik Pandya-led side will next lock horns with the Lankan Lions on Thursday, January 5 in the second T20I match. Dasun Shanaka and Co. will look to overcome their loss and will aim to level the series when they meet at the MCA stadium in Pune.
