Sri Lanka registered a convincing 16-run victory over India in the second T20I at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Thursday, January 5 and by the virtue of this big win, the three-match series is now leveled at 1-1. The hosts overall had a forgettable day with both the bat and the ball.

It was indeed a good toss to lose for the Lankans as they batted outstandingly well and kept the scoreboard ticking without breaking any sweat. They played a fearless brand of cricket by leaving the young Indian bowlers shell-shocked in the powerplay overs. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh’s three consecutive frontfoot no balls also summed up India’s ordinary day on the field.

As far as India’s batting performance was concerned, the top-order was blown away quiet easily by the spirited Sri Lankan bowlers. Even debutant Rahul Tripathi could not make any impact as he walked back to the dugout for just a run-a-ball five against his name. At one point, the hosts seemed to be heading towards a humiliating defeat before the seasoned middle-order duo of Axar Patel and Suryakumar Yadav carried out the rescue act.

However, the damage was already done by then and all the duo could succeed in doing from there on was to reduce the margin of defeat.

Skipper Dasun Shanaka leads exceptionally from the front

Sri Lanka got off to a flying start with openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis laying a solid foundation with an 80-run opening stand after which they seemed to be losing plot with wickets falling at regular intervals. It was during this difficult phase that skipper Dasun Shanaka made it matter for the visitors in the middle and death overs with an unbeaten 56 runs off 22 deliveries at an outstanding strike rate of 254.5 that powered the Lankans to a mammoth 206/6.

India looked in total disarray at 57/5 in the 10th over and that is when Suryakumar Yadav and Axar Patel staged a remarkable fightback for the hosts and nearly pulled off an impossible win as the duo went on to complete their respective half-centuries.

They added 91 runs for the sixth wicket stand before Yadav’s untimely dismissal for a 36-ball 51 in the 16th over. Axar was eventually dismissed for 65 runs off 31 deliveries.
