Team India thrashed neighbours Sri Lanka by 317 runs in the third and final ODI match at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, January 15. Rohit Sharma, skipper of the Men in Blue decided to bat first, and the decision was backed by solid performances coming from opener Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli who registered centuries to their names in the contest.

A 97-ball 116 by Gill and a dominating knock of 166* runs off 110 balls by Kohli propelled the side to attain a mammoth total of 390 runs in their stipulated 50 overs of the innings. With another century this year, Kohli marked his 46th ODI ton, the second most centuries scored in ODI cricket just behind India great Sachin Tendulkar who holds the record with 49 tons.

Kohli also scored the fastest-ever 150 in the 50-over format in India as he took just 106 balls, a feat that was previously owned by Australia’s George Bailey, who had taken 109 balls.

Furthermore, skipper Rohit and Shreyas Iyer started well but were unable to convert their scores into bigger numbers and were dismissed for 42 and 38 runs respectively. In any case, the solid start by the openers and then the dominant performance by in-form Kohli steered the side to put up a humongous total in Trivandrum.

Lankan Lions bow down in run chase

In response to the massive total set by the hosts, the Lankan Lions needed to win as they were playing for pride. However, it was the Indian bowling unit that completely shattered the opponent batters.

Mohammed Siraj bagged a four-fer whereas Kuldeep Yadav and veteran pacer Mohammed Shami got two wickets each under their belt to wrap up the contest and the series. Sri Lanka were done and dusted for mere 73 runs, thereby handing the biggest margin of win in ODI cricket to India by 317 runs.

Rohit Sharma and Co. registered a complete series sweep 3-0 in the three ODIs. Undoubtedly, the side has started off just as they would have wished for in the road to the ODI World Cup starting later this year. However, with matches coming thick and fast, team India will need to keep its complacency in check and face teams head-on as they did against the Islanders.
