The much anticipated Border Gavaskar Trophy lived up to the billing on the opening day of the first Test, which saw an intriguing battle between the bat and the ball. Team India have asserted their dominance after bundling out the visitors for a below-par total of 177 runs on a tricky surface in Nagpur. Rohit Sharma registered a brisk half century in the second innings to ensure India's advantage in the match.

While the Indian fast-bowling duo of Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami did the initial damage with the new ball, much of the talk was surrounded by the impact of spinners on a seemingly treacherous surface in Nagpur. Australia lost Usman Khawaja and David Warner in quick succession to the relentless Indian pacers, handing them the early advantage after electing to bat first in the contest.

Despite losing two cheap wickets, Australia did not let their heads drop thanks to Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith. Arguably two of the best batters in the longest format of the game at this time, they kept the Indian bowlers at bay with a solid partnership. The duo added an extra layer of entertainment for an expectant crowd with their characteristically unorthodox nuances and gestures.

They ensured that Australia went to Lunch without any further casualties, with Labuschagne nearing his first half-century on Indian soil. However, the home side struck back in the post Lunch session after the returning Ravindra Jadeja got rid of the no.1 ranked Test batter with an absolute ripper. The left-arm spinner dismissed Matt Renshaw on the very next delivery to turn the tide in India's favour.

Ravindra Jadeja and Rohit Sharma star for India on the first day

Smith was the next batter to go after Jadeja set him up with a brilliant piece of bowling. Australia were in a difficult position, with the scoreboard reading 109/5. That is when the visitors struck back with a counterattacking partnership between Alex Carey and Peter Handscomb. Carey, in particular, looked in great touch before constructing his own downfall, trying to reverse sweep Ravichandran Ashwin.

It went downhill from thereon pretty quickly as the visitors lost their remaining wickets by adding just 15 runs to the total, managing a paltry 177 runs on the board. India's Ravindra Jadeja, who made his return to international cricket after a lengthy hiatus, did not take long to get back into his groove, grabbing his 11th five-for in the format.

The Indian batters, especially Rohit Sharma, looked largely untroubled at the crease, taking full advantage of some wayward bowling by his Australian counterpart, registering his first half-century in Tests as Indian skipper. KL Rahul, who looked solid from the other end, departed at the fag end of the day.
