The 53rd match of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 featured a clash between the two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders and the Shikhar Dhawan-led Punjab Kings at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Tuesday, May 8.
Coming in to bat first after winning the toss, Punjab Kings posted 179 runs on the board after the first innings. Opening batter Prabhsimran Singh failed to make an impact as he was dismissed for 12 runs in just eight balls. However, skipper Shikhar Dhawan showed resilience and amassed some important runs for his side.
Dhawan scored 57 runs in 47 balls, furthermore, Jitesh Sharma and Shahrukh Khan’s late push helped the side post a respectable total on the board. Jitesh scored 21 runs in 18 balls, whereas Shahrukh played an unbeaten knock of 21 runs in eight balls.
Varun Chakaravarthy was the highest wicket-taker for Kolkata in the first innings; the Indian spinner took three wickets and conceded 26 runs in four overs. Harshit Rana took two wickets and conceded 33 runs in three overs, with Suyash Sharma and Nitish Rana taking one wicket each.

Coming in to chase the target, Kolkata got off to a decent start to the game as Jason Roy scored 38 runs in 24 deliveries. Rahmanullah Gurbaz failed to make an impact as he was sent packing for just 15 runs in 12 balls. After the fall of the first wicket, skipper Nitish Rana rose to the occasion and showed resilience. The 29-year-old scored 51 runs in 38 deliveries to bring his side closer to a win.
Furthermore, Windies all-rounder Andre Russell played an explosive knock, scoring 42 runs in 23 balls. He was accompanied by Rinku Singh who amassed 21* runs to his name in 10 balls to finish the game for the hosts. After the game, the situation in the IPL points table got even more complicated as Kolkata jumped to fifth place in the standings with 10 points in 11 games. On the other hand, Punjab drop down to seventh with 10 points in 11 games as well.
