Gujarat Titans (GT) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) squared off in Match 62 of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 15. The defending champions defeated SRH by 34 runs and consolidated their top spot in the IPL 2023 points table with 18 points. With this win, Hardik Pandya-led side also sealed their spot in the IPL 2023 playoffs.
SRH skipper Aiden Markram won the toss and invited GT to bat first. However, their decision backfired as GT posted a total of 188 in 20 overs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar provided his side with an early breakthrough, dismissing keeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha for a duck in the very first over of GT's innings. Meanwhile, Sai Sudharsan joined Shubman Gill and produced a significant 147-run partnership for the second wicket.
After Gill scored a fifty, all-rounder Marco Jansen dismissed Sudharsan for 47 runs. Meanwhile, the young opener continued his power-hitting and scored his maiden IPL century. In the last over of GT's innings, Bhuvneshwar removed Gill (101 off 58) and Rashid Khan in back-to-back deliveries. Notably, the veteran also got Mohammed Shami out in the over and finished with 5/30 in his four-over spell.
GT beat SRH by 34 runs to book playoff berth
During SRH's chase, Mohammed Shami provided an early breakthrough by dismissing Impact Player Anmolpreet Singh in the first over while Yash Dayal removed Abhishek Sharma. SRH batters struggled with the bat as they were 49/6 soon after the powerplay.
Meanwhile, keeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen led the charge for SRH and provided a sigh of hope for the visiting side. However, he was dismissed by Shami after scoring 64 off 44 deliveries. Shami and Mohit Sharma claimed a four-wicket haul each as the hosts restricted SRH by 154/9.
