Courtesy of Marcus Stoinis's sheer brilliance, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) secured back-to-back victories against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2024 clash held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday, April 23.

After being put to bat first, CSK faced an early setback with the dismissal of Ajinkya Rahane in the first over. Nonetheless, Ruturaj Gaikwad, back in his opening role, steadied the innings. While lacking support from Daryl Mitchell and Ravindra Jadeja he eventually found it from Shivam Dube in the middle.

The CSK skipper notched up his second IPL century off a mere 56 deliveries with the help of 11 fours and three sixes. He also formed a crucial century partnership with Dube, who contributed 66 runs from just 27 balls. Following Dube's departure in the final over, MS Dhoni entered the crease with just two balls left and scored a boundary off the final delivery, propelling CSK to set a challenging 211-run target for the visitors. Gaikwad remained unbeaten, smashing 108 off 60 deliveries, including 12 fours and three sixes. Meanwhile, Matt Henry, Mohsin Khan, and Yash Thakur have made one scalp each for Lucknow.

In pursuit of the daunting target, LSG also encountered an early setback, when CSK's premier pacer Deepak Chahar struck in the first over, dismissing Quinton de Kock for a three-ball duck. Mustafizur Rahman compounded the pressure by dismissing Rahul in the fifth over, leaving LSG at 45/2 at the end of the powerplay. Marcus Stoinis, batting at No. 3, then anchored LSG's innings, forming a crucial partnership with Nicholas Pooran, who smashed a quickfire 34 off just 15 deliveries.

Stoinis brought his first IPL hundred in the 18th over, reaching the milestone in 56 deliveries. With LSG at 179/4 by the end of the 18th over, the game seemed to be in CSK's favour but the 2022 debutants swiftly reversed the momentum in the following over, adding 15 crucial runs.

As the game entered its final over with LSG requiring 17 runs for the triumph, Stoinis took charge, hammering a maximum off Mustafizur Rahman on the first delivery, followed by a boundary. LSG then added five runs in the subsequent delivery as it was a boundary and no ball, putting CSK under arm-twisting. In the free hit, the Australian all-rounder struck another four as LSG snatched the victory with three balls to spare. Remarkably, he finished with a 120* off just 62 deliveries, including 13 boundaries and six maximums.
