Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capital exchanged blows in Match 16 of the Indian Premier League 2024 at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday. KKR won the toss and opted to bat aiming to capitalise on a hard surface that has no grass on it. Sunil Narine and Phil Salt made their intentions clear as the duo forged a 60-run stand for the first wicket in just 4.3 overs before Salt departed for 18 runs.
Narine kept his onslaught going as he had already fetched 28 runs off DC’s key bowler, Ishant Sharma. He along with Angkrish Raghuvanshi kept tonking and their partnership of 102 runs was a testament to the mayhem created in Vizag. While Narine was dismissed for a brilliant 85 off 39, Angkrish followed suit after playing a clap-worthy knock of 54 off 27.
Andre Russell entered the arena promoted to number four, and he continued where Narine had left for KKR. The momentum kept going, even as Shreyas Iyer walked back after a brief 18-run stay. To add salt to DC’s wounds, Rinku Singh entered and smashed Anrich Nortje for 25 runs in the 19th over in his 8-ball-26 cameo. The Caribbean all-rounder, however, could not finish the proceedings, courtesy of a perfect yorker by Ishant Sharma. KKR posted a mammoth target of 272 runs, just falling short of the all-time IPL record for highest total set by Sunrisers Hyderabad.
DC succumb to a majestic total set by KKR
DC looked under immense pressure when they walked out for the chase. It was evident when Prithvi Shaw and David Warner departed, upping the ante off failed execution as they scored 10 and 18 respectively. Mitch Marsh and Abishek Porel did not even open their account. Rishabh Pant looked at his usual best as he scored 28 off Venkatesh Iyer's first over before ending his innings with 55 off 25.
Tristan Stubbs played a mature innings alongside Pant, and he kept the DC in the hunt with his timely boundaries. The Proteas batter was dismissed after a sublime knock of 54 off 32 and Axar Patel got out on the very first ball he faced. DC were virtually out of the contention, but their lower order was just there for the formalities. Eventually, the inning was wrapped up in 17.2 overs and KKR emerged victorious by a whopping 106 runs, leaving a big scar on DC’s Net Run Rate (NRR).
Meanwhile, netizens were abuzz with the game, posting some extremely hilarious memes on social media platform, X, formerly Twitter.
