In a thrilling encounter at the Eden Gardens, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) emerged victorious against the Mumbai Indians (MI) by 18 runs in the 60th match of the IPL on May 11, 2024.

Batting first, KKR posted a challenging total of 157/7 in their allotted 16 overs. Venkatesh Iyer was the standout performer with a blistering knock of 42 runs off just 21 deliveries, supported by Nitish Rana's 33 off 23 balls. Despite late setbacks, KKR managed to put up a competitive total on the board, thanks to crucial contributions from Andre Russell (24) and Rinku Singh (20). Piyush Chawla and Jasprit Bumrah were the pick of the bowlers for MI, both scalping two wickets each.

Chasing a target of 158 runs, MI got off to a flying start with Ishan Kishan smashing 40 runs off 22 balls. However, regular wickets at crucial intervals hampered their chase. Rohit Sharma (19) and Tilak Varma (32) made valuable contributions, but MI fell short of the target, finishing at 139/8 in their 16 overs. Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy starred with the ball for KKR, claiming two wickets each, while Andre Russell also chipped in with two crucial dismissals.

The foundation was there but we could not capitalize after that: Hardik

After the game, Pandya acknowledged the challenge faced by MI, emphasising the need to capitalise on the batting foundation. He deemed the total par given the conditions and praised the bowlers for their efforts despite the dew. Looking forward, he emphasized enjoying the game and striving for better performances in upcoming matches.

"Tough one, yeah. As a batting unit, the foundation was there but we could not capitalize after that and keep the momentum up. The wicket was a little up and down and a little tacky so momentum was very important. I think it was a par score, given the conditions, felt that the bowlers did well. Every ball that came back from the boundary came back wet. The bowlers made sure they kept taking wickets. (On his thoughts for the next game) Nothing, just to go and enjoy as much as we can and play good cricket, that’s been my motto from the start. I don’t think we’ve played enough good cricket this season," he said after the match.
