Despite Match 69 of IPL 2024 being contested between Sunrisers Hyderabad, already through to the playoffs, and Punjab Kings, currently second from the bottom in the points table, it couldn't be entirely characterized as a dead rubber.

Despite their ninth-place position going into the match, the Punjab Kings had the opportunity to wrap up their season with two successive victories, which could have propelled them ahead of both the Gujarat Titans and the Mumbai Indians in the standings. Meanwhile, SRH, following a washout in their previous game, aimed to clinch a win here. Based on the result of the later game, they could potentially secure a top 2 finish.

Winning the toss, PBKS elected to bat first. With Sam Curran absent due to his commitment to the upcoming England-Pakistan series, Jitesh Sharma took charge as skipper for the final match of the season. Following a slow start that saw only five runs scored in the first two overs, all subsequent powerplay overs went for over ten runs, as PBKS sought to build momentum after amassing 61 runs in the initial six overs.

In fact, the departure of the southpaw, Atharva Taide, only increased the run rate. The 97-run stand between Taide and Prabhsimran Singh was PBKS' highest against SRH. The latter scored his third half-century in the IPL before departing for 71 off 45. Swashbuckling Rilee Rossouw came good with a quickfire 49 off 24. A late surge by Jitesh powered PBKS to 214/5, only the second time this season that PBKS surpassed the 200-run mark.

Onto the run chase, one Impact Player got the better of another, as Arshdeep Singh cleaned up Travis Head for a golden duck. Despite Harshal Patel dismissing the dangerous Rahul Tripathi with an over left in the powerplay, the damage was already inflicted, with as many as 84 coming in the powerplay. At the halfway stage, SRH were already 129-2, with Abhishek Sharma being the biggest source of carnage, amassing 66 off just 28.

The prolific wicketkeeper-batter, Heinrich Klaasen looked set for yet another fifty, however, Harpreet Brar knocked him over for a 26-ball 42-run knock. However, it was a tad too late for PBKS, who succumbed to a ninth loss in a forgettable campaign for them. Harshal secured a couple of wickets and went further up the list of those contending for the Purple Cap.
