Celebrating his 36th birthday, Mumbai Indians' batting coach Kieron Pollard couldn’t have asked for a better birthday present from his team. The Rohit Sharma-led side outclassed the defending champions as well as table-toppers, Gujarat Titans, in a high-scoring encounter at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium in match number 57 of the IPL 2023. Following their emphatic win, the Mumbai management arranged a special birthday bash for Pollard in the dressing room.
A clip of Pollard was then posted on the official Twitter page of Mumbai Indians. In the video, the coaching staff as well as MI players were heard singing the ‘Happy Birthday’ song for the 36-year-old. Following the cake-cutting, Tim David and the rest of the team tried to smear cake over Pollard's face, but the legendary athlete from West Indies looked prepared for it and spoiled their plans, as it was Tim David who instead ended up with the cake being smeared on his face by Pollard.
MI also captioned the clip over Twitter stating, “This cake smash > 409 runs smashed at Wankhede. Happy birthday, Polly.” Later, they also posted a video in which the former West Indies cricketer was seen thanking the team for the celebration as well as pointing out an interesting stat that MI had never lost a game on May 12.
The five-time IPL champions seemed to have picked up momentum just at the right moment in the tournament as it enters its business end. They are currently placed at the third spot on the points table with 14 points, winning seven out of the 12 games that they have played so far.
Their previous match against Gujarat Giants was an ideal result for them and they would be looking to repeat the same performance in the remaining two games as well. MI are set to play one away and one home game against Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers Hyderabad, respectively. Considering the form that MI are in, one can expect them to qualify for the playoffs and even finish in the top two.
Suryakumar Yadav has led the batting department scoring the most runs for MI in this year’s IPL. He has scored 479 runs in the 12 innings that he has played so far with an astonishing average of 43.54 and an impressive strike rate of 190.83. MI will be banking on him for delivering a few more match-winning knocks and helping them to lift the title for the sixth time.
