Despite being unable to earn his India call-up, Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan has been unstoppable in domestic cricket. Even after putting up consistent performances for Mumbai in the ongoing Ranji Trophy tournament, Sarfaraz failed to make a place for himself in India’s squad for the all-important Australia series which begins in February 2023.

In the current Ranji Trophy Group B match between Mumbai and Delhi at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the right-handed batter, who has been scoring runs like a machine in recent years, struck a century for his side. The star batsman scored 125 runs off 155 balls, including 16 fours and 4 sixes, to help Mumbai score 293 runs before the team was bowled out.

Sarfaraz has proved his worth time and again in the domestic setup. There are many experts who believe that the 25-year-old should be handed his international Test cap, and former India cricketer Venkatesh Prasad vouched for the same. Reacting to another sensational knock by the Mumbai batter, Prasad took to his Twitter handle to criticize the Indian board and wrote:

“Not having him in the Test Team despite 3 blockbuster domestic seasons is not only unfair on Sarfaraz Khan, but it’s an abuse to domestic cricket, almost as if this platform doesn’t matter. And he is FIT to score those runs. As far as body weight goes, there are many with more kgs.”

Future's bright for Sarfaraz Ahmed, but the wait continues

Sarfaraz Khan was kept out of India’s scheme of things for the Bangladesh tour, where India won the two-match Test series by 2-0. But he kept performing well on the domestic front and notched up centuries for fun. But even after proving his worth, all he has received in return has been a disappointment.

Not just Venkatesh Prasad, but there are many experts who believe that it is high time Sarfaraz should be made a part of India’s Test setup. The upcoming Australia series is a crucial one for India as they need to win it, so as to make it to the World Test Championship Finals. India named squads for only the first two Tests, and Sarfaraz’s fans and well-wishers will be hopeful of the Mumbai batter getting a chance in the remaining two games.
