Ajay Gnanamuthu's 'Cobra' hit the screens on Wednesday, 31st August. The action thriller stars Chiyaan Vikram as the protagonist of the film, who dons a role of a mathematical genius/assassin. The trailer for the movie dropped earlier this month on the 25th of August, exciting the fans with music from Oscar winner A. R. Rahman while featuring the KGF fame Shrinidhi Shetty.

Roshan Mathew, who plays Rishi, the lunatic antagonist of the movie, is probably the weak link in the film as he tries too hard to convince people of his methods but comes across as someone who has got all the mad energy but lacks substance in crucial junctures of the three-hour long thriller.

Irfan Pathan delivers brilliantly on his debut

Although the film suffers from convoluted writing and some weak performances, Irfan Pathan shines in his role as an Interpol officer. Pathan who has enthralled audiences with his exploits in the field of cricket does not disappoint in his role at all and packs a punch as his character has enough high moments to leave a mark on the audience. The former cricketer, who was making a debut on the big screen, has to be commended for his efforts as Aslan, his character, delivered the dialogues in Tamil with fluency.

Ajay Gnanamuthu needs to be praised for giving Irfan an extended role and not limiting it to a mere cameo for someone who was making his debut on the big screen. But the movie does not deliver on the promise and the only saving grace of the movie is protagonist Vikram's character, who revels in the role of an elusive assassin with some eye-catching action scenes in the movies.

Vikram, who plays Madhi, a mathematical genius, can be seen in several get-ups in numerous different locations across different timelines, which becomes a bit much at one point in time without providing proper information to the audience in a haphazardously managed action thriller.

The film never explores the mathematical prowess of Madhi, which could have intrigued the audience, who were served a typical action movie they have come to expect from Vikram. The inclusion of Srinidhi Shetty, Meenakshi Govindarajan, and Mirnalini Ravi had lots of potential, but the writing stifled them from leaving any mark and they never come to the fore in the romance portions.

All in all, it's a must-watch for all the Vikram fans who love seeing him play around with prosthetics. But for an avid cinema watcher, it might disappoint in several aspects, apart from a couple of powerful performances by the debutant Irfan Pathan and Anandaraj.

Meanwhile, here's how Twitterati hailed Irfan Pathan's performance on sliver screen:
